The Centre de Recherchjes Médicales de Lambaréné, CERMEL is looking for a Project Manager (from January 2021 until 31 December 2025)
The Centre de Recherches Médicales de Lambaréné (CERMEL) is one of the leading clinical research centres in Africa and was established in Lambaréné, Gabon. Its main activities focus on developing new antiparasitic agents against malaria, helminth infections, tuberculosis, and other infectious diseases. Since 2006, CERMEL has continuously expanded its capacities with state-of-the-art equipment for microbiology, parasitology, immunology, and virology. Currently, the centre has set up two new BSL-3 facilities: a lab for surveillance of emerging viruses and an insectary for studying pathogen transmission.
CERMEL has long-standing international collaborations with the Institute of Tropical Medicine of the University of Tübingen (Germany), the University of Leiden and the Academic Medical Center Amsterdam (Netherlands). Nationally, CERMEL collaborates with the University of Sciences and Technology in Franceville and the Medical Faculty in Libreville. B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D. and M.D. students from those Universities are hosted at CERMEL for their thesis degrees in biomedical sciences, epidemiology, and medicine. Recently, the University of Tübingen was granted the leadership of a new DAAD funded Global Centre for Health and Pandemic Prevention, Central African Infectious Disease and Epidemics Research Alliance (CAIDERA), in collaboration with the CERMEL, the Institut Pasteur and key partner institutions in the Central African regions, foremost, the Université des Sciences de la Santé, Libreville and CANTAM from 2021 to 2025
The candidate will take a leading role in the coordination of CAIDERA at CERMEL . The candidate will be involved in setting up and in tandem with a project manager at University of Tübingen in Germany, running of a new international M.Sc. programme on “Infection Biology & Control” by the University of Tübingen at the CERMEL for candidates recruited from the Central African region. This will involve coordinating course modules with colleagues in Tübingen, Institut Pasteur, CERMEL and elsewhere and communications with up to 20 M.Sc. students to be enrolled in October 2022. The candidate will also help coordinating a Ph.D. programme for up to 5 students and will be involved in diverse aspects related to running a large international project (finances, reporting, setting up meetings etc). In addition to the project management role, the candidate will be encouraged to identify his/her own scientific project related to the topic of the DAAD grant and continue to pursue a career in academic science if s/he wishes. The candidate will report directly to the project coordinators.
The PM is the primary contact for CAIDERA project implementation and is responsible for project specific communication and documentation. More specifically, the PM will prepare status reports and keep project team, CERMEL management, and stakeholders informed of project status and issues.
. Furthermore s/he organises meetings, to planned CAIDERA research conferences, and a total of 4 workshops and expert seminars until 2025. In addition, the PM will assist with logistic aspects related to the shipment of samples and materials/reagents between Tübingen and Lambaréné and Lambaréné to Tübingen with organising travel activities of project members. The candidate will be supported/assisted by an experienced project coordinator, his/her CAIDERA project management colleague at University of Tübingen and a large project management team at CERMEL as well as the respective administrative departments at the University of Tübingen and CERMEL. Nonetheless, the candidate is expected to develop initiatives and work independently.
Minimum of 3 years of related experience in the field of infectious diseases research (e.g., parasitology, microbiology, virology, immunology, genetics, epidemiology). Ph.D. degree is required.
Experience in working with European partner institutions will be an advantage. Prior experience in organising and coordinating projects or networks will also be a bonus.
Strong written and oral communication skills, high flexibility, resistance to stress and the willingness to travel.
Proficiency in French and English. Any German level is an advantage.
Experience in facilitating and building consensus in an interdisciplinary and multinational team environment. Able to build successful working relationships with a wide variety of collaborators. Networking.
Demonstrated problem-solving skills. Self-motivated and able to work independently using strong organizational, project and time management skills.
