The Centre de Recherches Médicales de Lambaréné (CERMEL) is proud to announce that Professor Ghyslain Mombo-Ngoma has been named to the 2026 TIME100 Health list, which recognizes the 100 most influential individuals shaping the future of global health.
This prestigious distinction honors Professor Mombo-Ngoma’s leading role in advancing
innovative strategies to combat malaria, one of the most pressing public health challenges
in sub-Saharan Africa. He has been recognized in particular for his leadership in the development
and evaluation of a novel single-dose malaria treatment combining sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine
with artesunate-pyronaridine (SPAP).
The groundbreaking clinical trial, conducted in Gabon under his leadership,
demonstrated the potential of this simplified therapeutic approach to improve
treatment adherence, optimize effectiveness, and strengthen malaria control strategies.
By reducing treatment complexity to a single-dose regimen, the SPAP approach represents a significant step forward in addressing operational challenges in malaria-endemic regions. Professor Mombo-Ngoma’s inclusion in the TIME100 Health list underscores not only his personal scientific excellence and commitment to improving health outcomes, but also the critical role of Gabon in advancing high-quality clinical research with global impact.
CERMEL celebrates this international recognition, which highlights the institution’s dedication to innovative research and its contribution to the fight against infectious diseases. This honor reflects the strength of collaborative research conducted in Gabon and reinforces the country’s position as a key contributor to global health innovation.
